There are hundreds of different types of aphids in Ohio. Aphids ae small (1/16-1/8 inch long), soft bodies insects commonly called plant lice or ant cows. They range in color from green to brown, red, black or purple.
Aphids are identified by their sucking moth-parts, long, thin legs, long antennae, pear-shaped body, and pair of tubelike structures. Aphids may be winged or wingless and colonies often have both forms.
Aphids excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew. This honeydew drips on the plant foliage or other structures and provides a suitable place for black sooty molds to grow. Ants often tend or care for aphids in return for the honeydew. Therefore, if ants are running over a plant, look carefully for aphids.
Some plants show no response to the aphids, while other plants produce distored leaves or stems. Occasional aphids may actually kill leaves or shall shoots.
Most common disturbances caused by aphids is their never-ending production of honeydew. This sweet liquid drips onto plant foliage and stems and is soon covered with black sooty mold.
These insects suck the juice of plants to the point where the plants, wilt, dehydrate, and possible die. They also spread viruses that can kill plants.
Asian Longhorned Beetles primarily infest Elm, Maple, Poplar and Willow trees. Adult females lay 45-62 eggs, chewing a small pit through the bark of the host tree. Eggs hatch 13-54 days, then larvae tunnel to the heartwood (a dense inner part pf a tree trunk).

Bronze Birch Borer (BBB) belong to the same family as Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The two share many characteristics. The adult beetles are called metalic wood bores because of their highly reflective spot or molted coloration. A fully grown larva is slightly longer than 12 mm (0.472 inches), very slender, and has a flattened, enlarged area behind its head. The bronze birch borer is a serious secondary pest of white, paper, and cut-leaf weeping birches. This native flatheaded borer will attack yellow, gray, and other species of birch. It has also been reported on beech.
Dutch Elm Disease is a fungal disease that is spread by Elm Bark Beetles. The first sign of infection is usually an upper branch of the tree with leaves start to wither and yellow in summer months before the normal autumn leaf shedding.

Local professional photographer Doug Day caught these photos at East Fork State Park in Ohio. This is a female Pileated Woodpecker with an Emerald Ash Borer Larvae in her beak. You can also see the damage to this tree.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) kills Ash trees within three to five years of infestation. EAB larvae feed on the living portion of the EAB infested tree and branches die back, sprouting around the base of the tree, and unusual woodpecker activity.

The Fall Webworm is a moth which creates the characteristic webbed nests on the tree limbs of a wide variety of hardwoods in the late summer and fall. Hardwood trees that can be effected include alder, ash, choke-cherry, cottonwood, elm, maple, various fruit trees, walnut and willows. Adult Fall Webworms are white with some orange markings on the body and legs. The wings often have some black spots and an expanse of of about 1 1/4”. Eggs are light green or yellow, globular, and laid in flat masses consisting of several hundred eggs. Larvae feed inside the tents. Very young larvae feed only on the upper surface of leaves; later, they consume whole leaves. The Fall Webworm feeds on just about any type of deciduous tree, where leaves are chewed; branches or the entire tree may become defoliated. The Fall Webworm can be treated in a couple different ways depending on the size of the tree and affected areas.

Hemlock Wooly Adelgids is the biggest concern for Hemlocks. Adelgids are soft body aphid-like insects that feed by sucking sap from trees.

TREE AND TURF SPECIALIZES IN NEEDLECAST TREATMENT . Needlecast attacks Spruce especially Blue, Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, Evergreen, and other cone-bearing trees and shrubs. It will start by affecting the lower branches and move up the tree. This disease causes the needles to rapidly and extensive discoloration. It will lead to the death of the tree or plant. Treat this disease two times a year for at least the first two years. When planting Spruce trees make sure the air circulation is good around the trees. Good weed control around the trees will help with circulation.

RUST (fungus)
Rust and other diseases caused by pathogenic fungi.
Scale insects are small insects variable in appearance. They are common pests of shade trees and shrubs. Adult females typically have soft bodies and no limbs, and are concealed underneath domed scales, extruding quantities of wax for protection. Males, in the species where they occur have legs and sometimes wings, and resemble small flies. Scale insects pierce plant tissue with their mouth parts and remain in one place, feeding on sap. The excess fluid they imbibe is secreted as honeydew on which sooty mold tends to grow.

Spider Mites are not insects but are more closely related to spiders. Spider Mites are less than 1 mm (0.04”) in size and vary in color, have four pairs of legs and no antennae. Heavily infested plants and trees may be discolored, stunted, or even killed. Most have the ability to produce a fine silk webbing, which collects dust and looks dirty.
Tree and Turf have cut down trees for us very neatly, skillfully, and efficiently. They have also successfully treated our diseased Bradford Pears, Blue Spruces, and Pines for disease. We recommend them.

I highly recommend Tree and Turf Technologies. I have used other services in my line of business and compared with them, Jim Wolfe and his men are far more knowledgeable in taking down a tree as well as treating trees for various problems. They explain clearly what they need to do, and I know that the area of work will be clean when his men leave. Jim and his men ae very personable and since I live in some woods where through the years many trees have been taken down, they have become good friends to me and my wife. I can trust them which in very important to me especially when the work needs to be down and I am not at home.

I have had the pleasure and good fortune to work with Mr. Jim Wolfe, of Tree and Turf Technologies, as well as it's parent company for over 12 years. This company's work, guided by Mr. Wolfe, is always correct, professional and of a very good value. Mr. Wolfe has helped us out with our properties at home as well as some farmand where trees needed a safety check. As a medical professional, I can say that Mr. Wolfe and his team are excellent. I refer back to my medical profession as I would like to make a comparison between their work and that of an excellent medical team. Tree and Turf has saved, due to excellent knowledge and treatment protocols, over the years, at my residence, 6 Ash trees which were susceptible to the recent Emerald Ash Borer. Tree & Turf Technologies also saved a formidable American Elm from Dutch Elm Disease, after I did lose one Elm early on, which was not on their watch. Jim also saved a White Oak tree of considerable height in my front yard by using special treatments and soil analysis. He sent soil for thorough analysis to Ohio State University. He keeps the treatments my trees need on a schedule which has worked. Jim and his team have also done pruning and treee limb shaping for us to enhance sunlight spread to many parts of my yard. We take great pride in our yard and Mr. Wolfe shares in that pride we have. Their work is safely done with respect to surrounding property, timely, very fairly priced, and well cleaned-up.
